Job description
The main purpose: The ICT Technician regularly provides network connectivity for events and staff through the installation and configuration of network cabling and wireless access. Patch rooms are to be checked and maintained on a daily basis ensuring service availability. The position will be exposed to and gain technical, support, infrastructure and operational experience. Installation, maintenance and removal of other IT infrastructure such as switches, cabling, cabinets, computers and point-of-sale machines. The role will be exposed to a number of technologies and best practices as the department supports an extensive infrastructure, internal staff and event customers. Given the size of the complex, the IT Technician spends a significant amount of time on the floor in the venue and this is not a desk bound position. There are always projects in progress and the role will often work with the team as a project resource. The operational hours are largely dependent on the events taking place which does at times require one to work over the weekends or late / early shifts.
ICT Support – All ICT support and event services (Internet, email, Wi-Fi, mobile, network, printing, digital signage, telephone, ICT infrastructure)
Reporting to the: ICT Service Delivery Manager
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
1. ICT Systems Maintenance
Ensure all Telecommunications, Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN) and Wireless systems are operational
Installation and maintenance of network / communication cabling, supporting infrastructure, wireless infrastructure
Ensure all supporting integrated systems are operational
Install test and ensure the prompt provision of all telecommunications, data-networks and IT equipment to clients
Develop a plan of regular preventative maintenance of all cabling, patch rooms and ancillary infrastructure systems
Perform regular documented maintenance and performance tests of all cabling and ancillary infrastructure systems
Ensure prompt and accurate documentation and billing of all ICT services supplied to clients
2. Operational Support
Ensure that all ICT services provided by external service providers are operational and report all risks and potential failures
Identify opportunities for revenue enhancement, cost reduction, and production efficiency
Monitors the work of outside contractors to ensure set standards are adhered to and all work is conducted in a safe and respectful manner ensuring no damage to existing infrastructure
Identify and report risks to the Head of ICT
Provide on-site IT and ICT hardware and software support to local users and clients
Facilitate the access of contracted service providers to secured venues
Ensure that all work performed is documented and logged accordingly
Ticket Management
3. Desktop Support
Interact with numerous computer platforms in a multi-layered client server and hybrid cloud environment.
Install, upgrade, support and troubleshoot Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office/365 suite of applications and services along with and any other authorised desktop applications
Install, upgrade, support and troubleshoot for printers, computer hardware and any other authorised peripheral equipment
Performs general preventative maintenance tasks on computers, laptops, printers and any other authorised peripheral equipment
Performs remedial repairs on computers, laptops, printers and any other authorised peripheral equipment
Customise desktop hardware to meet user specifications and business standards
Performs work in compliance within specified warranty requirements
Returns defective equipment/parts to maintenance inventory, documents customer repairs, maintains and restocks assigned parts inventory to insure proper spare parts levels
4. Project Management
Compilation of project scope and specification
Project procurement
Project delivery within scope and timeline
Job requirements
Minimum qualifications and experience:
Matric Certificate or equivalent (NQF Level 4)
Relevant Technical Certification
Those with a business or non-technical qualification could supplement their education with a certificate program, individual courses or directly relevant experience that provide the necessary IT industry knowledge required
2 - 3 years relevant experience in an ICT or Integrated Systems environment preferably in the hospitality industry.
Operational experience at a technician level.
Strong cabling and computer literacy skills.
Experience with fibre optic, RJ45 Ethernet, RJ11 Twin Pair telephony cabling and equipment, Co-axial cabling, wireless technologies.
Preference will be given to candidates with events experience.
Preference will be given to candidates with integrated systems experience i.e. building management systems, digital signage and point of sale.
